image004Located inside Hotel Casa del Mar—overlooking the ocean via two-story, floor-to-ceiling windows—this entirely new cafe and lounge (designed by White House decorator Michael S. Smith) evokes European seaside luxury in its every detail, including its handmade, aquamarine heated ceramic floor tiles (imported from Spain); hand-carved Italian wood tables; and ornate textured raffia ceiling tiles. Of the stunning visual design details throughout, perhaps the most captivating are the expansive windows themselves, which open out onto the ocean air, allowing guests to experience the balmy breeze or take in the sunset while sipping a cocktail or sharing a bite. Chef Sven Mede (a relative newcomer to LA via Michael Mina, Bradley Ogden, and the late Charlie Trotter) has crafted an inspired Italy-meets-California seasonal small plates menu with his signature crudo, bucatini pomodoro, and thin crust pizzas. Guests can also sample the flavors of North America’s East and West Coasts (be it seasonal Santa Barbara Spot Prawns or fresh Nantucket Bay Scallops), and continue their culinary journey with dishes inspired by the Italian seaside (such as the Steamed Clams with Calabrian Sausage or Big-Eye Tuna Sicilian Style). The menu will also feature a rotating selection of fresh daily seafood, seasonal salads with ingredients sourced from local farmers, housemade pastas, artisanal cheeses, and charcuterie.

Farmer’s Daughter Hotel

The iconic Farmer’s Daughter Hotel in the Fairfax district is letting dad live out his “Top Gun” fantasies, offering him a 50 minute flight simulator in an F-16 at the nearby Fly the Dream.  The state-of-the-art F-16 simulators feature 180-degree screens designed with a real world perspective for a realistic flying experience. On the ground, guests will receive a one-night accommodation in one of the boutique hotel’s stylish retro-designed guestrooms.
