Mud Hen Tavern Opens This Saturday, December 7

From acclaimed chef Susan Feniger, co-founder of Santa Monica’s Border Grill, and the talented team behind the celebrated STREET comes Mud Hen Tavern, a new neighborhood bar and restaurant, which will offer seasonal, gourmet pub and comfort food in a warm and relaxed setting.  Mud Hen Tavern will be hosting private events starting December 4 and will be open to the public for dinner starting on Saturday, December 7 at 4:00 pm, and will be open the following week for “limitless” weekend brunch at 11:00 am.

Located at 742 N. Highland Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90038 in the former STREET space, Mud Hen Tavern’s food, drinks and inviting atmosphere offers an affordable dining experience for the area.  Susan and Executive Chef and Partner Kajsa Alger will be preparing a wide variety of rustic dishes and bar food, with the occasional global inflections that these beloved chefs naturally bring to the table.  The bar team, led by Morgan Fox (Upstairs II, Pourtal Wine Bar), alongside mixology consultant Tricia Carr (formerly Alley), have curated a beverage program that offers a vibrant and accessible selection of international wines, local craft beers and artisanal cocktails that complement Mud Hen Tavern’s cuisine.  The refurbished space includes plenty of booths and communal tables, as well as an expanded bar with a draft beer system, all in the front room to allow patrons to easily walk in for drinks or dinner. The outdoor patio offers a more relaxing atmosphere for reservations, larger groups and private events.

“I’ve always wanted to open a casual neighborhood spot, and this side of town was in need of a bar and restaurant that just serves really great food and drinks that people can come back for every day.  I have fond childhood memories of going to baseball games with my dad in Toledo, Ohio to watch The Mud Hens play.  Afterwards, we’d always wander over to the local bar Andre’s to get sandwiches and argue about the best plays and worst errors of the game with the neighbors,” said Susan.  “Kajsa and I are re-creating that homey feeling of a lively gathering place for this area with Mud Hen Tavern.  We’ve built a name for STREET, and it’s still going to live on in lots of exciting ways, including new locations and a robust catering business.”

“Many things that people know and love about STREET will still be represented at Mud Hen Tavern.  Susan and I will be in the kitchen and most of our original crew is coming back, so STREET regulars will see a bunch of familiar faces.  We’ll be bringing exciting twists to some of those old tavern favorites, and with the larger bar area, we’re looking forward to doing really fun pairings with cocktails, draft beers and wine.  We can’t wait to open our doors and welcome in the community,” said Kajsa.

Mud Hen Tavern will be offering a selection of pizzas from their wood-fire oven, such as The Berliner with gruyere cheese, bacon and braised leeks and The Californian with blue cheese, fig and wild arugula.  The Classic Cheeseburger is made with an all-natural beef or turkey patty on a toasted brioche bun with marinated tomato, aioli, lettuce, aged cheddar and homemade pickles, or try it Hangover Style with a fried egg and bacon on top.

For vegetarians and vegans, there’s the Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burger with a homemade patty, Daiya cheese, roasted poblano peppers, tomato, avocado and hot shot aioli.  Paninis include an Ultimate Italian Deli Panini with sliced salami, mortadella, fontina cheese, tomato, mustard sauce and a spicy pepper relish and a Roasted Eggplant Panini with roasted eggplant, peppers, zucchini, mozzarella and a basil olive pesto.  And because everyone needs their Kaya Toast fix in this town, that celebrated dish from STREET is on the menu!

Main Plates range from Maple Whisky Glazed Short Ribs served with a mini Shepherd’s pie and sweet and sour cabbage to a Roasted Black Cod with barbecue glaze, white bean, roasted vegetables and a bacon vinaigrette.  Hopefully, everyone’s saved room for dessert, because the vegan Mocha will satisfy any sweet tooth with its dark chocolate cake, espresso mousse and hazelnut caramel, and the Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding is infused with Catdaddy Moonshine and brown sugar syrup.
